ARTISTIC FALLACY
I was talking to a fellow artist the other day and he was telling me about the difficulties of training the recent generation in the field of arts. One major concern was the lack of discipline in general. Which I think is sad, because somehow, the idea that art is a field that tolerates a lack of discipline has become sort of the norm, when in fact, it should be the complete opposite.
An artist should have the utmost discipline.
Think about it. A person who works in a corporate job is expected to have a certain level of discipline, enough to follow the rules and deliver results. But what he does outside of work is none of the company’s business.
However, if you are an artist, your output is dependent on your way of life. What you feed (and not feed) your mind and body plays a critical role in your art. What you do with your time dictates how well your art will be. Sure there has to be talent, but that can only give you a head start. Success in the long term requires more.
Truly, creativity is a unique human characteristic that separates us from animals, and all of us have it in different variations. It is a God-given gift, and we have to take care of it with daily intentional care.
