HEAVEN HORIZON

Sometimes I get cynical too, and I am aware of it. I believe it is because we live in a world broken by sin. For some reason, everything is subject to decay, even the most beautiful things. Therefore, I cannot in my own efforts maintain a positive attitude especially with all the things that are happening around us. Somewhere along the way, that cynicism is likely to hinder my ability to see the brighter side of things. It’s a rather sad way to face each day.

Then I catch a scene like this, right at the edge of my vision. A scene that encourages me to reflect on my preconceived notions. That despite how I feel about the state of this world, it is still surrounded by good, quietly existing around us, just as it has been ever since God said “It is good”. I mention it to my companions. They acknowledge it, but then carry on with what they were doing.

I know I gotta be a bit more intentional to notice these, since there are many other things vying for my attention. It did take me a while to realize what the sky was showing me. But that little intentionality does have its benefits. An uplifted spirit, a spark of joy, or at the very least, a simple smile. I believe it is hard to remain cynical while observing nature reveal its colors. God’s creation, the ones yet untouched by man’s sinful desires, has a way of reminding us that heaven may indeed be out there. A place where we can dwell in the presence of a God that calls to us, yearns for us. And nature is going to keep proclaiming that, whether we notice or not.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.”
