Small (ville) Beginnings

“Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been produced by His hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are; and, as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many…”

William Bradford

Some time ago I was invited by my friend to cover her school’s moving up ceremony. It will be the first time again for the students and their parents to see each other after such a long time.

They asked the parents to dress up their child in what the child hopes to become when they grow up. Some came in as teachers, some as chefs, a lot came dressed as doctors. The ones who will be graduating were also given togas to wear.

A few days before the event, news of a Texas school shooting bothered me very much. As a parent, the tragedy pained me and the feeling lingered up to the day of the event. In an ironic play of words, my job was also to shoot kids and parents.

The moving up ceremony was simple, but it held so much significance to the people involved. To the parents, to the children, and to the teachers. Whether they know it or not, aspirations and hopes are built early, and the prospect to dream grand dreams can be taught at such a young age. You can see it in the way they put on the caps and tassel, or in their posture and smiles as they take pictures together.

This may be a simple event. But if you observe carefully, you bring home lessons that widens the window of your soul a little bit more. My eyes are wide open.
